Instructions for Leaving a Room

First, decide it is a room and not a life.
This is harder than it sounds.
The coat by the door has been there so long
it has learned the shape of waiting.

Take the cup you did not finish.
Leave the chair at the angle you left it,
turned slightly toward the window
as though it had been listening too.

Do not look for a last thing to say.
There is no last thing.
There is only the door, which was always a door,
and the hallway, which does not know you,
and the sound the latch makes,
which is the sound of a room agreeing.
